After being diagnosed with dementia people invariably soon will be in contact with the local dementia coordinator and they will be invited to join for instance a dementia school. They may also attend arrangements in the local dementia club or dementia café – which are in many places run by local groups of the Alzheimer’s Association.
These first contacts may be very useful. Families feel relieved, when they seek important information and get the opportunity to meet others with identical difficulties.

A study-group inspired by the method called Lifestyle-Redesign showed positive effect.
Through obtaining awareness of personally important and meaningful activities, the participants with dementia regained leisure-activities and well-being.
One year after the termination of the group sessions the group still meets regularly once a week and a number of friendships have developed among the members.
